queeenpersephone:

they tell you that you can always say no
but they are liars. girls with
No on their lips end up in ditches;
they tell a truth that no one wants and it
bleeds out their bodies and tomorrows.

tell me: have we ever believed women?
with their nails like howls on chalkboard,
with their hearts a feast on the tables of men.
with their pleas washed out by the decrees of those
louder and lying and wrong.

we remember cassandra’s story, but not cassandra.
she was clever, like her brother. impetuous. true.
she was only a girl with dark brown hair and
dark brown eyes; she was only a child
when she said no to a god.

in his anger, he took not her voice but
her credibility.
with her mortal flaws, she broke her word, and in turn
he said he loved her and broke every word she could form.
he said nothing when others took her body and broke much more.

no, we don’t believe women
when they make their own bodies a map
of agony and ignorance, asking only to be believed.
the only truth that we have left to say over and over is that
men are not gods but they act like them.

with apollo’s charm and strength and control,
they cover our mouths and we wonder if death is better.
No, sisters - for we will build a world without ditches
and listen to cassandra. we will be heard.
i dare them to silence our screams.

- cassandra lives in every girl’s nightmares
